3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech, High Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, and Dades Valley

Meet your driver in Marrakech and leave the city in the morning. The road climbs through the High Atlas Mountains, offering views of mountain villages, valleys, and winding passes. Cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and stop at suitable viewpoints for photographs. Continue towards Ait Ben Haddou, a historic fortified village known for its earthen architecture. Walk through its narrow lanes and explore the traditional buildings that rise above the surrounding landscape. The site has appeared in several international film productions and remains an important example of southern Moroccan architecture.

After your visit, continue through Ouarzazate and travel along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. The scenery gradually changes as you pass villages, cultivated fields, and palm groves. Continue towards the Skoura region and the Valley of Roses, depending on the available time and road conditions. Later, follow the route to the Dades Valley, known for its rock formations and mountain scenery. Stop at selected viewpoints before reaching your accommodation. Enjoy dinner and spend the night in a hotel or guesthouse in the Dades area. The exact arrival time depends on traffic, visits, and the duration of your stops.

Day 2: Dades Valley, Todra Gorges, Erfoud, Rissani, and Merzouga

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and continue towards the Todra Gorges. The road passes small settlements and stretches of rugged landscape before reaching the impressive canyon. Here, steep rock walls rise above the river, creating a striking natural setting. Enjoy time to walk through the accessible section of the gorge and take photographs. The visit also offers an opportunity to observe local daily life in this part of the Atlas region. After the stop, continue towards the desert through changing landscapes that include dry plains, mountain foothills, and scattered oases.

Travel through the Tafilalet region and pass Erfoud, known for its fossils and date production. Continue towards Rissani, a historic trading town with a traditional market. Depending on the schedule, you may have time for a short visit. Then continue to Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi mark the edge of the Sahara. Depending on the arrangements, transfer to the desert camp by camel or another available vehicle. Watch the changing colours of the dunes around sunset. At the camp, enjoy dinner and a relaxing evening under the desert sky. Overnight accommodation is in a desert camp, with facilities depending on the selected camp category.

Day 3: Merzouga, Southern Morocco, and Return to Marrakech

Wake early if you wish to watch sunrise over the dunes. The morning light creates changing colours across the sand, making this a memorable moment in the Sahara. Return to Merzouga village for breakfast and prepare for the long journey back to Marrakech. This day involves considerable driving, so an early departure helps make the route more manageable. Travel through the Tafilalet region and pass palm groves, desert settlements, and the changing landscapes of southeastern Morocco. Your driver can arrange suitable breaks along the way, depending on the schedule and road conditions.

Continue through the region around Alnif or another suitable route towards Ouarzazate, depending on the itinerary and current road conditions. The return journey crosses wide valleys and increasingly mountainous scenery before reaching the High Atlas Mountains. Stop for refreshments and photographs when time allows. Cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and descend towards Marrakech. Arrival is generally expected in the evening, but the exact time depends on traffic, weather, and the duration of stops. This is a long travel day, and the itinerary prioritises the return transfer rather than extensive sightseeing. Your driver will drop you off at the agreed location in Marrakech, completing your private desert circuit.
