4-Day Ouarzazate to Merzouga Desert Tour
This private 4-day journey from Ouarzazate to Merzouga combines palm oases, mountain valleys, dramatic gorges and the dunes of the Moroccan Sahara. Travel through Skoura and the Valley of Roses before spending the first night in the Dades Valley. On the second day, visit the Todra Gorges and continue through Erfoud to Merzouga, where you will stay near the dunes of Erg Chebbi. The third day allows more time to explore the desert surroundings and visit Khamlia. On the final day, return to Ouarzazate via Rissani and the Draa Valley. Private transport gives you flexibility for scenic stops, while the extra day makes the desert visit less rushed than the three-day option.
4-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Ouarzazate – Skoura – Valley of Roses – Dades Valley
Leave Ouarzazate and travel towards Skoura, an oasis surrounded by palm groves and traditional kasbahs. Continue through the Valley of Roses, where small settlements and cultivated fields sit among the mountains. Stops for photographs can be arranged according to the schedule. The route then reaches the Dades Valley, known for its rock formations, winding roads and scenic viewpoints. Enjoy the landscape before checking into your accommodation. Overnight in a hotel or riad in the Dades Valley.
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga
After breakfast, travel to the Todra Gorges, where high rock walls create a striking natural corridor. Take time for a walk before continuing towards Erfoud, a town associated with fossils and the desert region. From there, drive to Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Depending on your arrival time and the services booked, you may take a camel ride at sunset or enjoy the dunes from the camp. Spend the night in a desert camp. Meals depend on the accommodation package confirmed with your booking.
Day 3: Merzouga – Desert Excursion – Khamlia – Merzouga
Spend the day exploring the surroundings of Merzouga without a long transfer between cities. After breakfast, discover landscapes around Erg Chebbi and visit Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa musical traditions. The excursion may include stops in desert areas and nearby settlements, depending on local conditions, the vehicle and the time available. The exact stops and activities should be confirmed before departure. Return to Merzouga in the afternoon. Having a second night in the area gives you more time to enjoy the dunes at a relaxed pace. Accommodation will be in a hotel or desert camp, according to the option booked.
Day 4: Merzouga – Rissani – Draa Valley – Agdz – Ouarzazate
After breakfast, begin the return drive to Ouarzazate. Pass through Rissani, a town known for its traditional market and trading heritage, then continue towards the Draa Valley and the area around Agdz. The scenery changes between arid terrain, mountains and green palm groves along the valley. Short stops may be possible depending on the schedule. Arrival in Ouarzazate is expected in the afternoon, although traffic and road conditions can affect the timing. This is mainly a transfer day, so an early breakfast and water for the journey are recommended.
