6-Day Itinerary from Fes to Marrakech
Day 1: Fes, Ifrane, Azrou and Midelt
Your journey begins in Fes, where your driver will meet you at your accommodation before heading towards the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, a town known for its distinctive alpine-style architecture, tidy streets and green surroundings. We then continue to the cedar forests near Azrou, where you can admire mature trees and enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery. There will be opportunities to stop for photographs and observe traditional villages along the way. The route continues to Midelt, a town situated between the Middle and High Atlas ranges, surrounded by rugged landscapes and orchards. After arrival, you can settle into your accommodation and enjoy a relaxing evening. This overnight stop breaks up the journey and prepares you for the landscapes and desert communities you will discover on the following day.
Overnight: Overnight in Midelt.
Day 2: Midelt, the Ziz Valley and Merzouga
After breakfast, leave Midelt and travel through mountain scenery that gradually gives way to drier landscapes. The route follows the Ziz Valley, famous for its extensive palm groves, traditional villages and sweeping views across the oasis. We will make suitable stops to appreciate the scenery and take photographs before continuing towards Erfoud, a town associated with date production and regional fossils. In the afternoon, arrive in Merzouga, close to the spectacular dunes of Erg Chebbi. The atmosphere changes dramatically here, with golden sand, open horizons and the quiet beauty of the Sahara. After checking in, you will have time to relax and enjoy the desert surroundings. The exact arrival time depends on road conditions and the length of the stops along the route.
Overnight: Overnight in Merzouga.
Day 3: Exploring the Merzouga Desert
Today is dedicated to discovering the landscapes and cultural diversity around Erg Chebbi. A 4×4 excursion can take you along desert tracks and through areas where nomadic families live, subject to local conditions and the confirmed itinerary. We will visit Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa music and welcoming atmosphere. You can learn about local traditions, everyday life and the relationship between desert communities and their environment. Depending on the schedule, there may also be stops at scenic viewpoints overlooking the dunes. In the afternoon, relax in Merzouga or choose an optional activity available locally. Camel rides, quad biking and similar experiences should be considered included only when they are specifically listed in your confirmed package.
Overnight: Overnight in Merzouga.
Day 4: Merzouga, Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley
After breakfast, leave the dunes behind and travel towards Rissani, a historic trading town with a traditional regional souk serving communities across the area. Continue through desert landscapes and oasis settlements until reaching Todra Gorge, renowned for its towering rock walls and the narrow passage carved by the river. There will be time to walk around the accessible area and appreciate the scale of the cliffs. The journey then continues towards the Dades Valley, where mountain scenery, earthen villages and unusual rock formations create a striking contrast with the Sahara. We will make scenic stops where time and road conditions allow. On arrival, settle into your accommodation and enjoy a quieter evening surrounded by the landscapes of southern Morocco.
Overnight: Overnight in the Dades Valley.
Day 5: Dades Valley, Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou
After breakfast, continue through valleys, mountain scenery and traditional settlements in southern Morocco. Depending on the route and available time, there may be opportunities to admire the Valley of Roses and its small villages. The journey then reaches Ouarzazate, a town known for its film studios and its position along historic routes across the south. If the schedule allows, visit Ait Ben Haddou, a historic earthen ksar recognised for its traditional architecture and cultural importance. Walking through its narrow lanes offers a glimpse of how buildings were adapted to the local climate and terrain. At the end of the day, continue towards Marrakech or stay in the Ouarzazate area, depending on the length and confirmed arrangements of your tour.
Overnight: Overnight in Marrakech or Ouarzazate, depending on the selected itinerary.
Day 6: High Atlas Mountains and arrival in Marrakech
After breakfast, travel towards Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains. The road provides views of rugged peaks, valleys and villages built along the mountain slopes. Suitable stops may be made to enjoy the scenery and take photographs. Conditions at the Tizi n’Tichka pass can change with the weather and traffic, so the overall journey time depends on the road situation and the number of stops. As the route descends towards the plains, mountain landscapes gradually give way to agricultural areas and the outskirts of Marrakech. On arrival, your driver will drop you at your accommodation or another agreed location. The remainder of the day is free to relax or begin exploring the medina independently.
